What changes the price
- Volume. The biggest factor. Several items in one trip cost less per item than separate pickups.
- Weight. Dense loads like construction debris, concrete and shingles cost more because the hauler pays disposal by the ton.
- Special handling. Fridges, freezers and AC units need refrigerant recovered under federal rules (EPA), and mattresses go through recycling programs.
- Access. Third-floor walk-ups, tight basements and long carries take more labor than curbside items.
- Timing. Some companies charge more for same-day or weekend service.
Rhode Island disposal fees (RIRRC, FY27)
Almost all trash in Rhode Island ends up at Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) in Johnston. Its fees affect what every hauler charges:
- The Residential Recycling Area is at the east entrance, 3 Shun Pike, Johnston (moved there in April 2024). Hours: Mon–Fri 6 AM–3:45 PM, Sat 6 AM–12 PM.
- Individual residents pay commercial rates, not municipal rates.
- Solid waste (which includes bulky waste and construction debris): $115 per ton, $65 minimum (FY27, effective July 1, 2026).
- Mattresses and box springs for recycling: free for up to 3 per day; $70 each after that, or if not recyclable.
- Appliances: free without refrigerant; $12 each with refrigerant (Freon).
- Car tires: $8 each. Residential e-waste: free.
Free and cheap town options
For a few curb-ready items, your town may be the cheapest choice. Warwick and Pawtucket offer free bulky pickup by appointment, North Providence and East Providence take one item a week, Cranston is free in March and September, and Newport charges $31.50 per item. Rules change, so check the Rhode Island bulky waste guide, which has the official links for each town.
