Rhode Island Bulky Waste Guide: Pickup Rules by Town
How to get rid of furniture, appliances and mattresses in Providence and eight nearby Rhode Island cities and towns: free and paid curbside pickup, limits, fees and drop-off sites, taken from official city and RIRRC pages. Checked October 1, 2026.
Town rules change, sometimes mid-year. Each section links to its source; confirm with the town before you put anything out. If a detail couldn't be verified, we say so.

Providence
Bulky pickup: Curbside bulky items (furniture, appliances, e-waste) by appointment with Waste Management, 1-800-972-4545, or the city's online request form, at least 24 hours before your regular trash day. Limit 3 items per unit. Set items out no earlier than 4 PM the evening before. The city only serves buildings with 6 or fewer units.
Fees: The city's bulky-item page says there is no extra fee except for mattresses. A June 2025 Providence Journal report said the new Waste Management contract would add per-item fees from July 2025 ($20 bulky item, $35 white good, $33 mattress). Confirm the current fee with WM or 311 before you book.
Mattresses: Free drop-off for Providence residents (2 items, ID required) at DPW, 700 Allens Ave, Saturdays 7 AM–12:45 PM; or a paid, bagged curbside pickup through WM.
Drop-off: DPW, 700 Allens Ave (Saturday mattress and e-waste drop-off for residents).

Warwick
Bulky pickup: Free curbside bulky pickup by appointment: call the bulky line at 401-732-9589 or book online at least one day before your collection day. The city's 2026 calendar and RIRRC list up to 5 items per pickup and 8 pickups per 12 months (one older city page still says 3 items). Items at the curb by 7 AM.
Fees: Free for regular bulky items and appliances. Since July 1, 2023 the city no longer collects construction debris (sheetrock, plaster, shingles, insulation). Mattresses and box springs are not collected curbside.
Mattresses: Not picked up curbside. Residents can drop them at the Municipal Recycling & Compost Facility, 111 Range Rd (proof of residency).
Drop-off: Municipal Recycling & Compost Facility, 111 Range Rd, Mon–Fri 7 AM–3 PM, plus seasonal Saturdays (April–December, weather permitting).

Cranston
Bulky pickup: Bulky waste is the property owner's responsibility. Schedule with Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545. Free pickups run only in March and September (one trip, up to 3 items per unit).
Fees: Outside March and September: $30 per bulky item. White goods (washers, dryers, fridges, water heaters) $40 per item. Mattresses $50 each, bagged. The free months exclude mattresses, construction debris, TVs/electronics and white goods.
Mattresses: $50 bagged curbside pickup via WM, or free by-appointment drop-off at the Highway Yard, 929 Phenix Ave, Thursdays 7:30–11:30 AM (call 401-780-3174; limit 4 pieces, twice a year).
Drop-off: Public Works Highway Yard, 929 Phenix Ave (tires, TVs and e-waste, motor oil), Mon–Fri.

Pawtucket
Bulky pickup: Free curbside pickup for bulky waste and furniture by appointment with DPW (401-728-0500 x233); furniture limit 3 pieces per appointment.
Fees: Bulky and furniture curbside: free. Refrigerators/freezers (Freon): $16 curbside. Transfer Station drop-off fees vary by item (for example $5–$20 per furniture piece).
Mattresses: $16 curbside (book and pay in person at DPW), or free drop-off at the Transfer Station (limit 3 per day) or at the monthly e-waste and mattress event at City Hall, if the mattress meets recycling requirements.
Drop-off: Pawtucket Transfer Station, 240 Grotto Ave, Mon–Fri 8 AM–2 PM, Sat 8 AM–1 PM (Pawtucket residents with ID).

East Providence
Bulky pickup: Bulky items and furniture picked up on Fridays by appointment through the DPW/Recycling Office (401-435-7701), one item per week; book by noon the Thursday before.
Fees: Appliances (including Freon units): $25 sticker from the DPW/Recycling Office, collected the second Tuesday of each month. Items put out too early can draw a $50 fine.
Mattresses: $25 per piece by appointment, Saturdays twice a month March–November and once in December (none in January–February); occasional free drop-off events.
Drop-off: DPW Yard, 60 Commercial Way, Mon–Fri 7:30 AM–3 PM (e-waste, scrap metal, propane up to 20 lb).

North Providence
Bulky pickup: Free curbside bulky and furniture pickup by appointment with DPW (401-233-1440). Furniture goes out on Wednesdays, limit one item per week.
Fees: Appliances are collected for a fee: $15 water heater or air conditioner, $20 washer, dryer or refrigerator (remove fridge doors).
Mattresses: $25 each, by appointment, paid in advance in person at DPW.
Drop-off: DPW, 2 Mafalda St, Mon–Fri 7 AM–3:30 PM (e-waste, small metal items).

Johnston
Bulky pickup: Bulky waste, furniture, appliances, mattresses and scrap metal are picked up curbside on your regular collection day by appointment with Rambone Disposal (401-946-1360).
Fees: We could not verify current fees for Johnston's curbside bulky pickup. Check with Rambone Disposal or Johnston DPW (401-231-4000 x4190) before you book.
Mattresses: By appointment with Rambone Disposal (fees not verified; ask when you call).
Drop-off: The state's Rhode Island Resource Recovery (RIRRC) facility is in Johnston (Residential Recycling Area, 3 Shun Pike). Johnston residents with a town-issued permit can dispose of up to 1 ton of solid waste there at no charge (RIRRC FY27 fee schedule).

Woonsocket
Bulky pickup: For homes in the city's curbside program: one bulky item per month, free. Get a free green sticker at DPW (169 Main St, ID and proof of residency), then call Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545 to schedule.
Fees: Bulky items and appliances are free with the sticker (appliances: orange sticker, one per week). Mattress curbside pickup through WM carries a fee.
Mattresses: Free drop-off at the Material Recycling Facility, 943 River St, after inspection (bring your own bag and tape), or paid curbside pickup via WM.
Drop-off: Material Recycling Facility, 943 River St, Mon–Fri 7 AM–3:15 PM, Sat 8–11:45 AM.

Newport
Bulky pickup: Curbside bulky pickup every other Thursday through Waste Management (1-800-972-4545).
Fees: $31.50 per bulky item (furniture, rugs, e-waste, scrap metal); $42 per appliance. Newport property owners also get two free trips (up to 500 lb each) per fiscal year to the WM transfer station at 65 Halsey St.
Mattresses: Free drop-off at the transfer station if clean and dry, or bagged curbside pickup for $31.50.
Drop-off: WM Newport Transfer Station, 65 Halsey St, Mon–Fri 8 AM–3:15 PM, Sat 8–11:45 AM (ID and proof of residency). Construction debris is a transfer-station item, not curbside.

Statewide: RIRRC Central Landfill, Johnston
- The Residential Recycling Area is at the east entrance, 3 Shun Pike, Johnston (moved there in April 2024). Hours: Mon–Fri 6 AM–3:45 PM, Sat 6 AM–12 PM.
- Individual residents pay commercial rates, not municipal rates.
- Solid waste (which includes bulky waste and construction debris): $115 per ton, $65 minimum (FY27, effective July 1, 2026).
- Mattresses and box springs for recycling: free for up to 3 per day; $70 each after that, or if not recyclable.
- Appliances: free without refrigerant; $12 each with refrigerant (Freon).
- Car tires: $8 each. Residential e-waste: free.

Frequently asked questions
Which Rhode Island towns pick up bulky items for free?
Of the towns in this guide, Warwick and Pawtucket offer free curbside bulky pickup by appointment, North Providence takes one furniture item per week for free, East Providence takes one item a week, Woonsocket one item a month with a free sticker, and Cranston is free only in March and September. Providence's city page says there's no fee except for mattresses, but a 2025 news report described new per-item fees, so confirm with WM.
Where can I drop off a mattress for free in Rhode Island?
RIRRC in Johnston accepts up to 3 recyclable mattresses per day for free. Providence (700 Allens Ave, Saturdays), Warwick (Range Road), Cranston (Phenix Ave, by appointment), Pawtucket (Transfer Station) and Woonsocket (Material Recycling Facility) also offer free resident drop-off. Check each town's conditions.
Can I take junk to the Johnston landfill myself?
Yes. RIRRC's Residential Recycling Area at 3 Shun Pike is open Mon–Fri 6 AM–3:45 PM and Sat 6 AM–12 PM. Residents pay commercial rates: $115 per ton for solid waste, $65 minimum (FY27).
